Two-machine flow shop with dynamic storage space
© 2020, The Author(s). The publications on two-machine flow shop scheduling problems with job dependent storage requirements, where a job seizes a portion of the storage space for the entire duration of its processing, were motivated by various applications ranging from supply chains of mineral resources to multimedia systems. In contrast to the previous publications that assumed that the availability of the storage space remains unchanged, this paper is concerned with a more general case when the availability is a function of time. It strengthens the previously published result concerning the existence of an optimal permutation schedule, shows that the variable storage space availability leads to the NP-hardness in the strong sense even for unit processing times, and presents a polynomial-time approximation scheme together with several heuristic algorithms. The heuristics are evaluated by means of computational experiments
Wyznaczanie optymalnego obciążenia maszyn i urządzeń w systemie produkcyjnym
A company operating nowadays is subject to constant pressure from methods aiming at optimizing processes and minimizing costs. An efficient use of resources such as business assets, human labour, know-how and management of material resources offers a possibility of obtaining a competitive advantage. The paper examines a production system of bath sponges, for which, in order to properly use its technical infrastructure, a model was simulated in eM-Plant environment. The data from the accepted variant were transferred over to MS Project, in order to schedule work and appropriately allocate the plant's employees. The resulting schedule is used to monitor progress of the plant's operation and for efficient communication between resources in the production system.Współcześnie działające przedsiębiorstwo poddawane jest ciągłej presji związanej z optymalizacją przebiegu procesów oraz minimalizacją kosztów. Odpowiednie wykorzystanie posiadanych zasobów w postaci aktywów przedsiębiorstwa, pracy ludzkiej, know how oraz zarządzania zasobami materiałowymi daje możliwość uzyskania przewagi konkurencyjnej. W artykule przeanalizowano system produkcyjny gąbek kąpielowych, dla którego w celu odpowiedniego wykorzystania posiadanej infrastruktury technicznej zasymulowano model w eM-Plant, a następnie dane z zaakceptowanego wariantu przetransportowano do MS Project, celem zaplanowania prac i odpowiedniej alokacji pracowników. Tak przygotowany harmonogram posłużył, jako podstawa do monitorowania postępu prac oraz sprawnej komunikacji między zasobami w systemie produkcyjnym
Implication of innovative mobile applications that streamline urban mobility to implement sustainable transport concepts and the SmartCity concepts
W dobie niezwykle szybkiego rozwoju przemysłu IT
miejska, a w szczególności wdrażanie koncepcji zrównoważonego
rozwoju transportu oraz koncepcji inteligentnych miast – SmartCity.
Jednym z najważniejszych celów, jakie powinny przyświecać zarządzającym
obszarami miejskimi, jest zmienianie tendencji mieszkańców do
wyboru środka transportu – z transportu indywidualnego samochodem
osobowym na transport zbiorowy (szczególnie komunikację publiczną),
co prowadzi do zmniejszenia natężenia miejskiej kongestii. Aplikacje
ruchu. Autorzy publikacji przedstawiają w niej dane aplikacje oraz
wyniki autorskich badań dotyczących stopnia wykorzystania aplikacji
mobilnych do przemieszczania się po mieście. In the age of rapid development of the IT industries
and mobile technology, as well as significant urbanization of cities
and a growing number of cars per capita, traffic congestion
is rapidly increasing. Nowadays, creating and deploying mobile
and web applications that improve the mobility in cities are very
important. Areas of efficient urban traffic are dealt with urban
logistics, and in the particular implementation of the concept of
Sustainable Urban Transport Project and the concept of intelligent
cities - SmartCity. One of the most important objectives for urban
management is to change behaviors of the population in terms of
their transportation choices - from the transport of an individual
car to public transport, which reduces the intensity of urban congestion
and greatly improve this process. The aim of this article is
to review the knowledge of the above mentioned concepts and to
review the most popular mobility applications. Authors using the
survey questionnaire examined the level of use of particular mobile
applications considering their usefulness and frequency of use by
respondents
Maximising the Total Weight of On-Time Jobs on Parallel Machines Subject to a Conflict Graph
The paper considers scheduling on parallel machines under the constraint that some pairs of jobs cannot be processed concurrently. Each job has an associated weight, and all jobs have the same deadline. The objective is to maximise the total weight of on-time jobs. The problem is known to be strongly NP-hard in general. A polynomial-time algorithm for scheduling unit execution time jobs on two machines is proposed. The performance of a broad family of approximation algorithms for scheduling unit execution time jobs on more than two machines is analysed. For the case of arbitrary job processing times, two integer linear programming formulations are proposed and compared with two formulations known from the earlier literature. An iterated variable neighborhood search algorithm is also proposed and evaluated by means of computational experiments
Two-Machine Flow Shop with a Dynamic Storage Space and UET Operations
© 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. The paper establishes the NP-hardness in the strong sense of a two-machine flow shop scheduling problem with unit execution time (UET) operations, dynamic storage availability, job dependent storage requirements, and the objective to minimise the time required for the completion of all jobs, i.e. to minimise the makespan. Each job seizes the required storage space for the entire period from the start of its processing on the first machine till the completion of its processing on the second machine. The considered scheduling problem has several applications, including star data gathering networks and certain supply chains and manufacturing systems. The NP-hardness result is complemented by a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) and several heuristics. The presented heuristics are compared by means of computational experiments
Scheduling divisible loads to optimize the computation time and cost
Efficient load distribution plays an important role in grid and cloud applications. In a typical problem, a divisible load should be split into parts and allocated to several processors, with one processor responsible for the data transfer. Since processors have different speed and cost characteristics, selecting the processor order for the transmission and defining the chunk sizes affect the computation time and cost. We perform a systematic study of the model analysing the properties of Pareto optimal solutions. We demonstrate that the earlier research has a number of limitations. In particular, it is generally assumed that the load should be distributed so that all processors have equal completion times, while in fact this property is satisfied only for some deadlines; for many optimal schedules this property does not hold. Moreover, fixing the processor sequence in the non-decreasing order of the cost-characteristic may be appropriate only for Pareto-optimal solutions with relatively large deadlines; optimal schedules for tight deadlines may have a different order of processors. We conclude with an efficient algorithm for finding the time-cost trade-off
